The road season has come to a close. Our team had a fantastic season. We achieved some great results. We accomplished our goal for the season, which was, “Have fun riding bikes while promoting our sponsors, partnerships, and the sport of cycling.”

Sponsors

First off, I would like to thank our generous sponsors. The season would not have been the same without their support. Thank you sponsors!

Riders

I would like to thank all of our riders who put in the miles and effort to make this season a success. We had some fantastic results this year, and we had a good mix of riders. We welcomed some new comers to the mix who were a great addition. We had some guys take on challenges like ironman as well as some who raced out of state. Chris Parsons won the 45+ New Mexico Regional Criterium Championships.

Bannock Street Criterium

Our team helped race director Deidre Moynihan with the Bannock Street Criterium. The criterium was a success this year and our riders volunteered their time to help with course marshalling, set up, medals, and clean up. The course went the opposite direction from past years.  It was an honor to be a part of this event. We hope to continue to work with Deirdre in the future on events.

VR7 Colorado Cycling Team’s 2015 Season Recap

The team’s inaugural season was a success. Now that the dust has settled for most (Except the crazy guys still racing Cross), I thought I would reflect on the season.

Sponsors

First off, I would like to thank our generous sponsors. The season would not have been the same without their support. Thank you VR7, Evapco, Veggie-Go’s, American Roofing Supply Inc., VeloSoul Cyclery, and Pit Viper.

Riders

I would like to thank all of our riders who put in the miles and effort to make this season a success. We had 22 riders sign up for the team. Some riders rode their first bike race ever this season. Some of them have been racing for many seasons. What matters is that we all had fun riding bikes.

Mount Evans Hill Climb

Our team helped race director Deidre Moynihan with the 50th anniversary of the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hill Climb. The Mt. Evans hill climb was a success this year and our riders volunteered their time to help with course marshalling, set up, bag drop, and clean up. It was an honor to be a part of such a magnificent event with such a rich Colorado history. We hope to continue to work with Deirdre in the future on events.

Best on Hess Team Time Trial

The race was on! The crowd was loud! We were flying fast! Then we hit the 180 turn at the end of the out and back course and headed back to the finish. Only 4.5 miles to go. BOOOOOM! Our merry band of five quickly exploded and shelled two of our riders out the back, and I was seeing stars just trying to hold the wheel of my teammate ahead of me.

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 9.33.23 PM

It was our second Team Time Trial this year, and the first one was a blast for me. We did drop two riders pretty early on that first one, but the course was relatively flat and we pushed on keeping a pretty steady pace. This course was a little different. It didn’t seem like much when we looked at it, but we made a critical mistake of not preriding the course the day or weeks before. We went out hot at the gun and pushed the pace hard. We were having fun cruising downhill not a care in the world. Alarm bells should have been blaring when we hit nearly 45 mph going down on an out and back course.

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 9.28.27 PM

The way back was somewhat more difficult than anticipated. The hill offered little to no recovery, and my heart rate was sky high. I hit a new high for beats per minute that day (189). My teammates David Altschuld and Mike De Sena allowed me to wheel suck for most of the way back since I could barely keep up with them. I was the third and final rider though in our group and had to hang on to the finish. When we crossed the line I nearly vomitted on myself and felt like passing out would be a good option at that point. Luckily I held it together and kept my lunch down. We ended up in fourth place in the SM4 group which I was pretty happy with.

Our SM5 group which consisted of Chris Parsons, Chris Hill, Dan Kaskubar, Guy Pasquino, and Troy Westergren managed to crush the SM5 Team Time Trial and placed first in their category (They were the only ones in their category that showed up). Hey showing up is half the battle at these races, and on this day it was 99% of it. They had a blast too while they did it.

Hess TTT 1

It didn’t hurt that the race director had some pretty stellar podium ladies there for the podium photo shot. Oh and a bunch of beer! Nice work guys.

Hess TTT 2

We would like to thank our sponsors that helped make this ride such a success. Without our sponsors this wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. Thank you Evapco, American Roofing Supply Inc., and Veggie Go’s for the funding for our registration fees. And we would like to add a shoutout to Pit Viper for providing the team with some super sweet shades. Check out the official results for the team below.

Race Report | City Park Criterium & Colorado State Championship Deer Trail Road Race

 City Park Criterium

Rocky Mountain Road Club (Thump Cycling) organizes this event and it was fantastic this year. The weather was perfect for racing.

DCIM100GOPROG0054924.

The day started off early with the combined SM5 and MM 40+ 5 group. Team VR7 came out in force for this race. We had four riders pushing their limits and testing out their legs. The 20 minute race was quick from the gun, and the announcer was quick to point out our team coming together to work hard on the front of the group. Chris Hill, Dan Kaskubar, and Chris Parsons strung the field out nicely and pulled for a large portion of the race at the front.

DCIM100GOPROG0084963.

They were staying out of trouble at the front but also using up some of their reserves setting the pace. With about three laps to go some of the other teams had hit the front and an attack went off. One of the stronger Thump riders took a flyer off the front. He was eventually reeled in by the group, but still had the legs to make another attack and hold off the group. The peloton came charging through after him and Chris Parsons crossed the line fourth with Colin Rhinehart a few riders behind him. Since the group was combined Chris Parsons ended up taking second place in the MM 40+ 5 group and took the team’s first podium of the year! Colin Rhinehart ended up missing the podium in the SM5 group by one place finishing fourth. Dan Kaskubar finished in eight and Chris Hill continued his streak finishing 13th for the fourth race in a row.

The afternoon races went well for the team. The SM4 40+ group had a strong race. David Altschuld pulled off a seventh place finish in the group and narrowly avoided disaster with a guy leaning on him before going down on the last lap. Check out the video below that Garrick Mitchell captured. We hope for a speedy recovery for those involved.

The SM4 race was the last race of the day, and Mike De Sena pulled off a solid ninth place finish while I hung on to the back of the group the whole time and came in at 32. The team results for this race are posted below.

Deer Trail Road Race

Deer Trail Road race is the state championship road race. You have to travel about an hour East of Denver which seems like a flat part of the state. Don’t be fooled. Even out on the eastern plains there is a fair bit of climbing to be had. The course consisted of a couple out and backs on road 217 and road 34.

Deer Trail Road Race

The SM5 and SM4 40+ groups rode a total of 42 miles for their races. Chris Hill was able to finally break his 13 curse and had a really solid race finishing sixth in the SM5 field. Colin Rhinehart came in at 18 after taking the last corner a little wide and needing to scrub some speed before trying to catch onto the back of the pack as they charged away up the hill.

IMG_0024

The 180 degree turnarounds and the one turn in the course proved to be tricky spots in the race. providing their fair share of excitement. David Altschuld ended up flatting and ther is pretty much nothing you can do after that happens. He did finish the race though! Never give up! He came in at 40 well behind the group, but stuck it out and finished.

The SM4 race was 57 miles total with over 3,000 ft of vertical. Mike and myself lined up for the start under a shady tree and chatted with a couple of 60+ riders before the start. They were pretty funny guys and have been racing bikes for a very long time. It was cool to see these guys still out there enjoying racing and riding. As the group rolled through town on the neutral start we ended up pretty far back in the pack. I figured there would be plenty of opportunities in a 57 mile race to move up so I didn’t think too much of it.

IMG_0004

About 20 miles in I realized the mistake we had made. The group never really strung out. We rode four or five abreast for the majority of the race. It was mentally taxing riding in such a tight group for so long, and moving up with near impossible. Mike proved that he had what it took though. He stayed calm the entire race and never dispaired. When the group came around the last 180 turnaround Mike was able to make his move and stuck with the group as they charged towards the finish line. He narrowly avoided going down within sight of the finish line and still managed to cross the line in ninth place. That was a solid effort on Mike’s part and we are proud of his finish at the state championship. I was barely hanging on to the back of the group at the last 180 turnaround and my legs were cramped from not taking on enough water that day. As the group charged away I did everything in my power to hang on, but got popped off the back. I still had four miles though to the finish line so I put my head down and rode as hard as my cramped legs would allow me. I ended up in 35th place about two minutes back from the lead group. I was happy with the result, and will be looking to improve. I keep saying that so hopefully the improvement comes sooner rather than later. Overall it was a great day at the races, and the team is having fun. Check out the fun video that the Primal guys put out last year from the race. It gives you an idea of the course and the dramatic music and preview feel of the video definitely adds to the quality.

Here are the team results for the Deer Trail Road Race. Good work out there guys.

Deer Trail Team Results

Ridge at 38 Criterium

Today was a beautiful day for a bike race in Colorado and the Ridge at 38 crit proved to be a great event again this year. There was a great staging area near the finish, plenty of music and entertainment for families (aka bounce house!) and obviously some killer bike racing.

The course is 1.5 miles with some sweeping corners, but nothing overly technical. The pack stayed together surprisingly well for both the MM4 and SM5 races which is a good indication that the course is nice and straightforward.

VR7 had members racing in SM5,MM5,MM4 and SM4 and I was on hand to watch the SM5/MM5 race at 9:10 AM. The racers had 20 minutes in store for them and basically perfect conditions to race in. VR7 had Chris Parsons in the SM5 field coming off a second place finish from City Park and Colin Rhinehart fresh off of 4th place at City Park. We also had Chris Hill in SM5 who has put in consistent results all year….we had a good feeling about this one.

MM5/SM5

The field stayed intact for the first few laps with an un named rider trying to get away solo off the front. He never gapped more than about 50 feet and the field soaked him up on lap 3. A few riders got spit out the back but the pack kept a steady manageable pace for the first 6 of 7 laps and stayed relatively together.   Colin and Chris were working together and Chris H was looking strong riding alongside them in the middle of the field.

The pace picked up hard on the last lap, and if you could hang on you had a shot at a top ten finish. Coming around the last corner Chris P was off the front with Colin 4 wheels back. Chris P had a lot of momentum coming into the last 200 m and he just cranked it out, not letting anyone come around him.  Chris put his arms up in the last 50 meters and claimed the victory for VR7.

Colin opened up his sprint and maintained his position in 4th, coming across the line in 3rd for the SM5 group.

Chris H. Held on for 5th place (SM5), another strong result for him, especially with riding sunshine hill climb yesterday. Our CAT5s are riding really well at the moment, keep your eyes on these guys!

MM4 and SM4

MM4 was next and Dave Altschuld was representing VR7. Dave is another strong rider for us and he was looking solid through 5 laps. The MM4 group was really hitting it hard, spitting guys put the back constantly. Dave looked comfortable though I didn’t see the finish. I will update later with his result and Mike’s result from SM4.

Another great day on the bikes for VR7 Colorado Cycling. Racing is always fun, but locking down two podiums feels really really good. Congrats again to Chris Parsons and Colin Rhinehart.

We had some racers at Sunshine on Saturday as well, will post a report soon!

Race Report | Federal Center Classic (Carnage)

There are days that you look back on and think to yourself… What just happened? Why did that go so wrong? This past Sunday was one of those days. It wasn’t all bad though for the team. We did end up with five riders that finished their races out of seven. Three of our riders though have seen better days including me. Galen Stilgebauer was there to capture some of the images on his camera.

Ben Broken Wrist

Galen captured a shot of Ben in Shock after the race.

The term Carnage comes to mind. The definition of carnage is, “Large-scale killing or maiming, as in war or an accident.” (thefreedictionary.com) That is pretty much what occurred (at least the maiming part).  Ben and I were having a real good race. We had moved up to the front on the first lap and even led the pack for part of it maintaining good position. People were a little nervous because it was cold out and there was some water on the course, but overall things were looking up. Ben was staying protected just behind me and we were completing our second lap. The final turn is a long sweeping right. We were going 30 mph into it. There was nothing to it. Just sweep right and get ready for the long drag to the finish line. complete the circuit two more times and the race is over. But things didn’t quite go like that. Ben and I were about 10 to 15 riders back on the outside of the field staying out of trouble. I noticed out of the corner of my eye a guy getting a little squirrely up ahead on the inside. He rode into the guy next to him and they both went down. I had a bad wreck last year at the Air Force crit and I always remind myself to look for the way out. My mind flashed and I thought we can get around them on the outside. That was about the point where people started skidding across the road. I ran out of real estate and before I knew it I had tagged the curb with my front wheel and supermanned into the field. Ben slammed on his brakes and went over his handlebars landing face first on the pavement with his arms out in front. Bam… The rest is a blur but I remember getting up checking myself out and then running over to see if Ben was alright. Ben took the worst of the fall and I waited with him til the paramedics showed up. He had blood pouring out of his chin and he claimed his wrist was hurting him. Later we found out that both of his writs were broken. I checked on my bike and found a mangled mess.

crash

Biking is an Expensive Hobby… Broken Parts

The chain ring and crank was completely destroyed, the front tire had a one inch hole in it, and the wheel was jammed against the fork. We will see what the final assessment is when our team sponsor Velosoul checks it out.  Garrick Mitchell caught the crash that took Ben and Myself out on his onboard camera.

Ben ended up breaking both his left & right wrist and spent most of the day in the ER. It was not fun. We all know that riding our bikes can be dangerous. It is just a shame when people go down. Be sure to always wear your helmet kids. It was a scary wreck and I hope everybody is alright. Heal up quick Ben. We will get you back on that thing soon!

A special shout out to our team sponsor Velosoul for looking out for us. They are working on our bikes so we can get back out there on the road.

SM4 Standings

– Ben Hildebrandt (DNF) 999999999th (two broken wrists & facial lacerations)

The SM5 race was equally as sketchy as the 4s. There were a number of smaller wrecks in that race, and our teammate Dan was caught up in one of them. He went down hard and took a hit to the face. He was pouring blood from the his upper lip, but he remounted his bike and fought back into the race to finish 21st. That never-give-up attitude is amazing. Andrew Smith had our best finish in this race coming in at 11th. Our CAT 5 guys are learning their way around the race course. It will be exciting to see what they can produce this year.

– Colin Rhinehart – 14th

– Chris Hill – 15th

Thank goodness things settled down later in the day for David. David had a strong race in a strong field. He ended up keeping the rubber side down for the whole race and crossed the line 15th. Again Garrick Mithcell caught the action with his onboard camera. That guy is a beast. He races both races most weekends. This video gives you a better feel for the course.

SM 4 40+

– David Altschuld – 15th

Some of us might be a little banged up right now, but we will be back out there in no time to mix it up again. Heal up quickly and never give up.

Race Report | CSM Lookout Hill Climb and Crit

The annual Colorado School of Mines Lookout Hill Climb Time Trial is the second race of the season. VR7 was well represented by David Nelson, his wife Allegra Nelson, and Dan Kaskubar. Thanks to Serge Olivier for snapping some sweet pics of the riders.

David set a blistering pace up the mountain. He finished the pillar to BB Grave segment in 20:39. That is an extremely impressive time. He placed fourth overall in the SM4 category. Results can be found at coloradocycling.org. His average speed was 13.2 mph and his estimated power output was 292 Watts. See the below data collected using the greatest cycling app currently known to man, Strava…

For those of you who have never ridden Lookout before it is a 4.5 mile climb from the pillars at the bottom of the climb to the turn off for the Buffalo Bill’s Grave. The average gradient is 5% for the climb. It is not the steepest climb around, but it makes for a fantastic Time Trial. The fastest time this year went to Michael Burleigh and his impressive mustache. Burleigh rode the 4.5 mile climb in 18:04… That’s fast… Screen Shot 2015-03-14 at 6.35.33 PM

The local cyclists are not the only ones that know Lookout Mountain. The USA Pro Challenge has included the iconic Golden, Colorado climb in 2 of their week long races. Tom Danielson talks about the climb below. The crowds that have lined the road for the pro peleton field in the past were large and rowdy. I’m sure there will be future opportunities to see some of the great names in the sport of cycling charge up Lookout.

The weekend didn’t end with the hill climb on Saturday. The Colorado School of Mines hosts their criterium on Sunday as well as a sprint race. The criterium course was slightly different than last year’s course which slammed riders into a brutally steep climb over and over until only the strong were left… Which was about 2 laps in… The course this year was a little more forgiving. Check out the video posted by Garrick Mitchell from Thump Cycling. Ok so I lied. It looked just as brutal as last year. Wanted to congratulate Adam Fivehouse for his third place finish in the crit on Sunday. Adam is the coach of the University of Denver Cycling Club and rides for Primal. Nice work out there Fivehouse.

Special shout out to my alma mater, the Colorado School of Mines. Their cycling promo video shows some shots of the Lookout mountain ride, and the cycling team puts on the Lookout Mountain Hill Climb Time Trial every year as well as the crit and street sprints. Topher mentions the 2007 National Championship in mountain biking. I raced on the team that year and have fond memories of Nationals.
