The road season has come to a close. Our team had a fantastic season. We achieved some great results. We accomplished our goal for the season, which was, “Have fun riding bikes while promoting our sponsors, partnerships, and the sport of cycling.”

First off, I would like to thank our generous sponsors. The season would not have been the same without their support. Thank you sponsors!

Riders

I would like to thank all of our riders who put in the miles and effort to make this season a success. We had some fantastic results this year, and we had a good mix of riders. We welcomed some new comers to the mix who were a great addition. We had some guys take on challenges like ironman as well as some who raced out of state. Chris Parsons won the 45+ New Mexico Regional Criterium Championships.

Bannock Street Criterium

Our team helped race director Deidre Moynihan with the Bannock Street Criterium. The criterium was a success this year and our riders volunteered their time to help with course marshalling, set up, medals, and clean up. The course went the opposite direction from past years.  It was an honor to be a part of this event. We hope to continue to work with Deirdre in the future on events.

2016 | VR7 Colorado Cycling Team

Welcome to the 2016 Season!

It is time to dust off the cobwebs and get that cycling machine out for some riding.

We have finalized our sponsorships and are working on completing the design for the kits. We would like to welcome our sponsors to the team. We look forward to a great year in and out of the saddle.

Our Mission Statement:
Have fun riding bikes while promoting our sponsors, partnerships, and the sport of cycling.

VR7 Colorado Cycling Team’s 2015 Season Recap

The team’s inaugural season was a success. Now that the dust has settled for most (Except the crazy guys still racing Cross), I thought I would reflect on the season.

Sponsors

First off, I would like to thank our generous sponsors. The season would not have been the same without their support. Thank you VR7, Evapco, Veggie-Go’s, American Roofing Supply Inc., VeloSoul Cyclery, and Pit Viper.

Riders

I would like to thank all of our riders who put in the miles and effort to make this season a success. We had 22 riders sign up for the team. Some riders rode their first bike race ever this season. Some of them have been racing for many seasons. What matters is that we all had fun riding bikes.

Mount Evans Hill Climb

Our team helped race director Deidre Moynihan with the 50th anniversary of the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hill Climb. The Mt. Evans hill climb was a success this year and our riders volunteered their time to help with course marshalling, set up, bag drop, and clean up. It was an honor to be a part of such a magnificent event with such a rich Colorado history. We hope to continue to work with Deirdre in the future on events.

Race Report | City Park Criterium & Colorado State Championship Deer Trail Road Race

 City Park Criterium

Rocky Mountain Road Club (Thump Cycling) organizes this event and it was fantastic this year. The weather was perfect for racing.

DCIM100GOPROG0054924.

The day started off early with the combined SM5 and MM 40+ 5 group. Team VR7 came out in force for this race. We had four riders pushing their limits and testing out their legs. The 20 minute race was quick from the gun, and the announcer was quick to point out our team coming together to work hard on the front of the group. Chris Hill, Dan Kaskubar, and Chris Parsons strung the field out nicely and pulled for a large portion of the race at the front.

DCIM100GOPROG0084963.

They were staying out of trouble at the front but also using up some of their reserves setting the pace. With about three laps to go some of the other teams had hit the front and an attack went off. One of the stronger Thump riders took a flyer off the front. He was eventually reeled in by the group, but still had the legs to make another attack and hold off the group. The peloton came charging through after him and Chris Parsons crossed the line fourth with Colin Rhinehart a few riders behind him. Since the group was combined Chris Parsons ended up taking second place in the MM 40+ 5 group and took the team’s first podium of the year! Colin Rhinehart ended up missing the podium in the SM5 group by one place finishing fourth. Dan Kaskubar finished in eight and Chris Hill continued his streak finishing 13th for the fourth race in a row.

The afternoon races went well for the team. The SM4 40+ group had a strong race. David Altschuld pulled off a seventh place finish in the group and narrowly avoided disaster with a guy leaning on him before going down on the last lap. Check out the video below that Garrick Mitchell captured. We hope for a speedy recovery for those involved.

The SM4 race was the last race of the day, and Mike De Sena pulled off a solid ninth place finish while I hung on to the back of the group the whole time and came in at 32. The team results for this race are posted below.

Deer Trail Road Race

Deer Trail Road race is the state championship road race. You have to travel about an hour East of Denver which seems like a flat part of the state. Don’t be fooled. Even out on the eastern plains there is a fair bit of climbing to be had. The course consisted of a couple out and backs on road 217 and road 34.

Deer Trail Road Race

The SM5 and SM4 40+ groups rode a total of 42 miles for their races. Chris Hill was able to finally break his 13 curse and had a really solid race finishing sixth in the SM5 field. Colin Rhinehart came in at 18 after taking the last corner a little wide and needing to scrub some speed before trying to catch onto the back of the pack as they charged away up the hill.

The 180 degree turnarounds and the one turn in the course proved to be tricky spots in the race. providing their fair share of excitement. David Altschuld ended up flatting and ther is pretty much nothing you can do after that happens. He did finish the race though! Never give up! He came in at 40 well behind the group, but stuck it out and finished.

The SM4 race was 57 miles total with over 3,000 ft of vertical. Mike and myself lined up for the start under a shady tree and chatted with a couple of 60+ riders before the start. They were pretty funny guys and have been racing bikes for a very long time. It was cool to see these guys still out there enjoying racing and riding. As the group rolled through town on the neutral start we ended up pretty far back in the pack. I figured there would be plenty of opportunities in a 57 mile race to move up so I didn’t think too much of it.

IMG_0004

About 20 miles in I realized the mistake we had made. The group never really strung out. We rode four or five abreast for the majority of the race. It was mentally taxing riding in such a tight group for so long, and moving up with near impossible. Mike proved that he had what it took though. He stayed calm the entire race and never dispaired. When the group came around the last 180 turnaround Mike was able to make his move and stuck with the group as they charged towards the finish line. He narrowly avoided going down within sight of the finish line and still managed to cross the line in ninth place. That was a solid effort on Mike’s part and we are proud of his finish at the state championship. I was barely hanging on to the back of the group at the last 180 turnaround and my legs were cramped from not taking on enough water that day. As the group charged away I did everything in my power to hang on, but got popped off the back. I still had four miles though to the finish line so I put my head down and rode as hard as my cramped legs would allow me. I ended up in 35th place about two minutes back from the lead group. I was happy with the result, and will be looking to improve. I keep saying that so hopefully the improvement comes sooner rather than later. Overall it was a great day at the races, and the team is having fun. Check out the fun video that the Primal guys put out last year from the race. It gives you an idea of the course and the dramatic music and preview feel of the video definitely adds to the quality.

Here are the team results for the Deer Trail Road Race. Good work out there guys.

Ridge at 38 Criterium

Today was a beautiful day for a bike race in Colorado and the Ridge at 38 crit proved to be a great event again this year. There was a great staging area near the finish, plenty of music and entertainment for families (aka bounce house!) and obviously some killer bike racing.

The course is 1.5 miles with some sweeping corners, but nothing overly technical. The pack stayed together surprisingly well for both the MM4 and SM5 races which is a good indication that the course is nice and straightforward.

VR7 had members racing in SM5,MM5,MM4 and SM4 and I was on hand to watch the SM5/MM5 race at 9:10 AM. The racers had 20 minutes in store for them and basically perfect conditions to race in. VR7 had Chris Parsons in the SM5 field coming off a second place finish from City Park and Colin Rhinehart fresh off of 4th place at City Park. We also had Chris Hill in SM5 who has put in consistent results all year….we had a good feeling about this one.

MM5/SM5

The field stayed intact for the first few laps with an un named rider trying to get away solo off the front. He never gapped more than about 50 feet and the field soaked him up on lap 3. A few riders got spit out the back but the pack kept a steady manageable pace for the first 6 of 7 laps and stayed relatively together.   Colin and Chris were working together and Chris H was looking strong riding alongside them in the middle of the field.

The pace picked up hard on the last lap, and if you could hang on you had a shot at a top ten finish. Coming around the last corner Chris P was off the front with Colin 4 wheels back. Chris P had a lot of momentum coming into the last 200 m and he just cranked it out, not letting anyone come around him.  Chris put his arms up in the last 50 meters and claimed the victory for VR7.

Colin opened up his sprint and maintained his position in 4th, coming across the line in 3rd for the SM5 group.

Chris H. Held on for 5th place (SM5), another strong result for him, especially with riding sunshine hill climb yesterday. Our CAT5s are riding really well at the moment, keep your eyes on these guys!

MM4 and SM4

MM4 was next and Dave Altschuld was representing VR7. Dave is another strong rider for us and he was looking solid through 5 laps. The MM4 group was really hitting it hard, spitting guys put the back constantly. Dave looked comfortable though I didn’t see the finish. I will update later with his result and Mike’s result from SM4.

Another great day on the bikes for VR7 Colorado Cycling. Racing is always fun, but locking down two podiums feels really really good. Congrats again to Chris Parsons and Colin Rhinehart.

We had some racers at Sunshine on Saturday as well, will post a report soon!

Race Report | Haystack Mountain Time Trials

The Team showed up today stoked to ride together. We had one of our newest members, Mike Desena, show up to join the team on our first Team Time Trial Experience. The team consisted of three CAT 5 riders, Chris Hill, Dan Kaskubar, and Colin Rhinehart, and two CAT 4 riders, Mike Desena and myself(Devin Rhinehart).  Haystack TTT

We put in a solid effort for our first ever Team Time Trial. The clouds were dark and we had all made our way through torrential downpour to get to the race that day. Lucky for us the rain had stopped as we lined up, but the roads were wet and the rain was threatening to start again. As the clock ticked down and the judge counted down five, four, three, two, one, GO we rolled out and got in a line. I pulled first and we started off nice and easy. We steadily picked up the pace and started taking 30 second pulls at the front. We were rotating through and everyone was looking pretty good.

Haystack TTT Strava

At about mile seven or eight we lost Chris. Chris had ridden in the Individual Time Trial earlier that day and finished 13th in the SM5 field. He seems to really like lucky number 13. We continued on without Chris and kept our pace high. At about mile nine we hit a small hill and managed to pop Dan off the back. We thought about sitting up and waiting, but the bit was between the teeth and we couldn’t be slowed down. We trudged on. Two brothers and the newbie taking turns until Mike could barely hang on. Turns out the Rhinehart bros can bring the pain when we want to. We knew the clock stopped at the third rider across the line, so the three of us encouraged each other while taking pulls and trying to keep the pace as high as possible. When the finish line came into sight we all felt relieved. But we had to put in the last effort and we sprinted for the line. Poor Mike gave it his all and looked a little green around the gills after the final sprint. He hasn’t raced in a while, but recovered well and was super pumped after we caught our breath.

Colin Haystack TTT
Our final time was 39:45 and we finished in fifth place out of eight teams in the SM4 group. Not too shabby for our first Team Time Trial. Check out the video below. Sorry for the length and not catching the finish, but I was too tired to edit the footage and kind of enjoyed watching the whole thing. I need to get a new SD card that can carry more footage if I am going to continue to shoot these videos. Hope you enjoy.

Race Report | Koppenburg, Wheels of Thunder, & Superior Morgul

It has been a while since we checked in. We had some wind taken out of our sails after the Federal Center Race. Our driving force and leader Ben Hildebrandt went down and out with broken wrists and a scarred mental state. He is already back on the bike though indoors and we hope to see him climbing Deer Creek soon.

Chris Hill Start of the Koppenburg SM5 Race

Chris Hill Start of the Koppenburg SM5 Race

Koppenburg

Koppenburg is an early season road race in Colorado that mirrors some of the spring classics over in Europe. The name of the race is borrowed from the section of cobles in the Tour of Flanders that often times brings riders to a stand still and forces some off their bikes.

David Nelson

David Nelson

The course is a 5.5 mile circuit with about 2 miles of dirt. The highlight of the event though is the dirt climb shown in this video. The mud and gradient are enough to bring riders to a stand still and running up the hill becomes standard practice.

Our riders put in a good effort in this event. Chris Hill finished 9th in the SM5 division, David Nelson finished 18th in the SM4 division, and David Altschuld did not finish in the MM 40+ 4 division after coning down with a bug.. It is truly an accomplishment to brave the elements and course in this event. We are proud of our riders.

Wheels of Thunder

Wheels of Thunder is typically a fast crit with smooth pavement. A nice early season race late enough in the year that the weather should be warm and enjoyable for a bike race. This year mother nature had other plans. The skies darkened and the wind whipped up. Rain sprinkled down on the course making things a little interesting. The smooth corners turned treacherous and the splashback drenched you to the bone (I am being overly dramatic).

Devin Rhinehart Wheels of Thunder

Devin Rhinehart Wheels of Thunder

It was cold and wet though, which deterred a few racers, but somehow the SM4 group still mustered the courage to bring 46 riders to the start line. That just goes to show the competitiveness of this group. Nothing is going to stop some of these guys from getting out there to race. I had a decent race staying towards the front and doing some work to bring back some early breaks, but soon realized why it is better to conserve your energy. The last lap I found myslef drifting backwards through the group in slow motion as they charged up the hill on the course. I eventually popped and managed to hang on to a 28th place finish. The video below shows a lap of the course in the bright sunshine. Wouldn’t that be nice.

Superior Morgul

The Morgul race series is a Colorado classic. The Wall is the finishing climb for the road race on Sunday and has roots that date back to the 1970s Red Zinger Classic and the 1980s Coors Classic. The movie American Flyers with Kevin Costner features the climb up the Wall. Check out the highlights from this movie below and find a way to watch it if you have never seen it.

Chris Hill put in a solid effort for both the circuit race Saturday and the road race Sunday. He finished both races in 13th place in the SM5 group. His results are improving every race. Dan Kaskubar broke into the top ten in the SM5 group with a solid 9th place finish in the SM5 group. He was able to make the early break and hold on to a solid finish in that race. We are proud of what these guys have done for the team. We hope now that summer is officially here (hopefully) we can get some more of the guys on the squad out there to enjoy the race season.
