VR7 Colorado Cycling Team’s 2015 Season Recap

The team’s inaugural season was a success. Now that the dust has settled for most (Except the crazy guys still racing Cross), I thought I would reflect on the season.

Sponsors

First off, I would like to thank our generous sponsors. The season would not have been the same without their support. Thank you VR7, Evapco, Veggie-Go’s, American Roofing Supply Inc., VeloSoul Cyclery, and Pit Viper.

Riders

I would like to thank all of our riders who put in the miles and effort to make this season a success. We had 22 riders sign up for the team. Some riders rode their first bike race ever this season. Some of them have been racing for many seasons. What matters is that we all had fun riding bikes.

Mount Evans Hill Climb

Our team helped race director Deidre Moynihan with the 50th anniversary of the Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hill Climb. The Mt. Evans hill climb was a success this year and our riders volunteered their time to help with course marshalling, set up, bag drop, and clean up. It was an honor to be a part of such a magnificent event with such a rich Colorado history. We hope to continue to work with Deirdre in the future on events.

Local Rides | July 4th Weekend

4th of July Loveland Pass and Montezuma

The fourth of July weekend is a great time to celebrate our nation. I am proud to be an American! And nothing says America more than rocking a pair of Pit Vipers  Merika style and riding your bike through the mountains of Colorado.

IMG_0770

IMG_0826

Friday I was lucky enough to be joined by my father (Ryan Rhinehart) as we left from Silverthorne on our way to tackling the infamous Loveland Pass. We cruised through Silverthorne at a nice easy pace and enjoyed the views as we rode past Lake Dillon. We made it to Keystone in pretty good time and started up the real climb.

IMG_0701

We somehow managed to get split up at this point. I am not sure what happened… But we met back up again at Arapahoe Basin which will host the finish of one of the stages of the US Pro Challenge later this year.

IMG_0714

Dad and I struck out from the Beach at A-Basin to complete the climb. We were enjoying the fresh mountain air and the cool breeze as we meandered through the mountains. It was really peaceful. That is when we noticed something out of the corner of our eyes. It was a MOOSE! Luckily for us we were in a car and could roll up the windows for a little added safety. Moose tend to be a little aggressive. Oh wait… We were on road bikes. Dang it! We slowly got off the bikes and watched as the Moose finished up her meal, and sauntered across the road behind us. It was a tiny moose, and we were excited that we got to see it, and that it didn’t try to stomp us into the ground.

IMG_0759

IMG_0827

We finished the long climb at the top and took a picture for good measure. CHEESE!

IMG_0754

The way back down was uneventful since we got stuck behind a semi truck that was crawling down the mountain. I did manage to get around it at one point and hit 50 mph towards the bottom, but it is a much better descent when you don’t have to wait behind vehicles.

IMG_0823

The Sunday after the fourth of July was another long climb up to Montezuma. We were joined by Mark Nadeau and Peter Haynes. They are members of our cycling family. Mark has put together more organized rides for our group than I can count, and has been kind enough to include our family in the events every year. We have enjoyed some pretty awesome ride experiences with these two, and we are looking forward to the Copper Triangle ride in August where the whole crew will be together again in the mountains of Colorado. Rumor has it that a couple very special guests will be joining us for that ride so check back in August for an update.

IMG_0798

The ride Sunday ended at a quaint coffee shop in Silverthorne where more family and friends met us for a cup of coffee or two. It was a great weekend, and we are excited for the many adventures coming up in the next couple weeks.

Race Report | Best on Hess Team Time Trial

Best on Hess Team Time Trial

The race was on! The crowd was loud! We were flying fast! Then we hit the 180 turn at the end of the out and back course and headed back to the finish. Only 4.5 miles to go. BOOOOOM! Our merry band of five quickly exploded and shelled two of our riders out the back, and I was seeing stars just trying to hold the wheel of my teammate ahead of me.

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 9.33.23 PM

It was our second Team Time Trial this year, and the first one was a blast for me. We did drop two riders pretty early on that first one, but the course was relatively flat and we pushed on keeping a pretty steady pace. This course was a little different. It didn’t seem like much when we looked at it, but we made a critical mistake of not preriding the course the day or weeks before. We went out hot at the gun and pushed the pace hard. We were having fun cruising downhill not a care in the world. Alarm bells should have been blaring when we hit nearly 45 mph going down on an out and back course.

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 9.28.27 PM

The way back was somewhat more difficult than anticipated. The hill offered little to no recovery, and my heart rate was sky high. I hit a new high for beats per minute that day (189). My teammates David Altschuld and Mike De Sena allowed me to wheel suck for most of the way back since I could barely keep up with them. I was the third and final rider though in our group and had to hang on to the finish. When we crossed the line I nearly vomitted on myself and felt like passing out would be a good option at that point. Luckily I held it together and kept my lunch down. We ended up in fourth place in the SM4 group which I was pretty happy with.

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 9.30.28 PM

Our SM5 group which consisted of Chris Parsons, Chris Hill, Dan Kaskubar, Guy Pasquino, and Troy Westergren managed to crush the SM5 Team Time Trial and placed first in their category (They were the only ones in their category that showed up). Hey showing up is half the battle at these races, and on this day it was 99% of it. They had a blast too while they did it.

Hess TTT 1

It didn’t hurt that the race director had some pretty stellar podium ladies there for the podium photo shot. Oh and a bunch of beer! Nice work guys.

Hess TTT 2

We would like to thank our sponsors that helped make this ride such a success. Without our sponsors this wouldn’t be nearly as much fun. Thank you Evapco, American Roofing Supply Inc., and Veggie Go’s for the funding for our registration fees. And we would like to add a shoutout to Pit Viper for providing the team with some super sweet shades. Check out the official results for the team below.

Race Report | Federal Center Classic (Carnage)

There are days that you look back on and think to yourself… What just happened? Why did that go so wrong? This past Sunday was one of those days. It wasn’t all bad though for the team. We did end up with five riders that finished their races out of seven. Three of our riders though have seen better days including me. Galen Stilgebauer was there to capture some of the images on his camera.

Ben Broken Wrist

Galen captured a shot of Ben in Shock after the race.

The term Carnage comes to mind. The definition of carnage is, “Large-scale killing or maiming, as in war or an accident.” (thefreedictionary.com) That is pretty much what occurred (at least the maiming part).  Ben and I were having a real good race. We had moved up to the front on the first lap and even led the pack for part of it maintaining good position. People were a little nervous because it was cold out and there was some water on the course, but overall things were looking up. Ben was staying protected just behind me and we were completing our second lap. The final turn is a long sweeping right. We were going 30 mph into it. There was nothing to it. Just sweep right and get ready for the long drag to the finish line. complete the circuit two more times and the race is over. But things didn’t quite go like that. Ben and I were about 10 to 15 riders back on the outside of the field staying out of trouble. I noticed out of the corner of my eye a guy getting a little squirrely up ahead on the inside. He rode into the guy next to him and they both went down. I had a bad wreck last year at the Air Force crit and I always remind myself to look for the way out. My mind flashed and I thought we can get around them on the outside. That was about the point where people started skidding across the road. I ran out of real estate and before I knew it I had tagged the curb with my front wheel and supermanned into the field. Ben slammed on his brakes and went over his handlebars landing face first on the pavement with his arms out in front. Bam… The rest is a blur but I remember getting up checking myself out and then running over to see if Ben was alright. Ben took the worst of the fall and I waited with him til the paramedics showed up. He had blood pouring out of his chin and he claimed his wrist was hurting him. Later we found out that both of his writs were broken. I checked on my bike and found a mangled mess.

crash

Biking is an Expensive Hobby… Broken Parts

The chain ring and crank was completely destroyed, the front tire had a one inch hole in it, and the wheel was jammed against the fork. We will see what the final assessment is when our team sponsor Velosoul checks it out.  Garrick Mitchell caught the crash that took Ben and Myself out on his onboard camera.

Ben ended up breaking both his left & right wrist and spent most of the day in the ER. It was not fun. We all know that riding our bikes can be dangerous. It is just a shame when people go down. Be sure to always wear your helmet kids. It was a scary wreck and I hope everybody is alright. Heal up quick Ben. We will get you back on that thing soon!

A special shout out to our team sponsor Velosoul for looking out for us. They are working on our bikes so we can get back out there on the road.

SM4 Standings

– Devin Rhinehart (DNF) 999999999th (Broken Bike)

– Ben Hildebrandt (DNF) 999999999th (two broken wrists & facial lacerations)

The SM5 race was equally as sketchy as the 4s. There were a number of smaller wrecks in that race, and our teammate Dan was caught up in one of them. He went down hard and took a hit to the face. He was pouring blood from the his upper lip, but he remounted his bike and fought back into the race to finish 21st. That never-give-up attitude is amazing. Andrew Smith had our best finish in this race coming in at 11th. Our CAT 5 guys are learning their way around the race course. It will be exciting to see what they can produce this year.

Thank goodness things settled down later in the day for David. David had a strong race in a strong field. He ended up keeping the rubber side down for the whole race and crossed the line 15th. Again Garrick Mithcell caught the action with his onboard camera. That guy is a beast. He races both races most weekends. This video gives you a better feel for the course.

SM 4 40+

– David Altschuld – 15th

Some of us might be a little banged up right now, but we will be back out there in no time to mix it up again. Heal up quickly and never give up.
